Artisan Wreath-Making - Sun, Dec 1
Learn how to create an artisan Nordic-style wreath with local artist Elsa Thorp.
Service Description
Sunday, December 1st 2024 2:00-4:00pm Create your own bespoken wreath out of vines and a diverse curated selection of dried botanical materials gathered by Elsa or locally sourced in Victoria. Elsa will show examples of her sculptures before you get started on creating your own. First we will shape the vines into a base and then select botanical materials to attach. Your finished piece can be hung on the wall or door at home, or as a centre piece on your dinning room table. ____ Elsa Thorp is a South Melbourne artist and graduate of the City of Port Philip Environmental Leadership Course. Elsa's artistic journey began in art school two decades ago after being surrounded by plants and nature by a scientist father specialising in research of exotic fruit production. After earning a Fine Arts degree in New Zealand, she exhibited black-and-white nature photography across Europe during her seven years in Berlin. Nine years ago, Elsa relocated to Melbourne, where she transitioned to crafting botanical sculptures with naturally dried and fresh seasonal materials. Beyond artistic expression, this art form serves as a source of mental well-being for Elsa, and she now shares the therapeutic benefits through workshops, fostering a community that appreciates the healing power of crafting with organic materials. Elsa is passionate about supporting local. Her process involves sourcing seasonal materials from local markets, direct from farms and a bit of foraging. She has developed relationships over the last nine years with farmers, visiting their beautiful properties, and local stores. The hunt for unusual seasonal materials gives her work a temporal quality where it's ultimate configuration cannot be known until the very last minute. www.elsathorp.com All material provided. You will take home your own artisan wreath that you've created. Light snacks and refreshments included. Please note: This class is located at Lilijana Upstairs (169 Bay Street, Port Melbourne).
